Protecting Europe’s Energy Infrastructure Against Climate Risk
Zurich Resilience Solutions (ZRS) will be attending edie 26 to talk about the growing physical climate risks that threaten energy infrastructure across the UK and Europe, and what action is required for a resilient energy transition.
The energy transition is not simply a climate imperative - it is a strategic necessity for economic stability, national security, industrial competitiveness, and long-term prosperity. This is driving the ambitious transformation of energy infrastructure across Europe. As governments and energy companies work to deliver the clean energy revolution, the falling costs of renewables in the generation mix means that it is these assets in particular that are set to dominate electricity generation in the future.
But how prepared is the energy sector for the increasing physical impacts of climate change? Even if net-zero targets are met, physical climate risks are set to increase, which puts the long-term energy transition at risk.
At edie 26, ZRS will be sharing insights from its Safeguarding our Energy Future report, which analysed over 25,000 power generation sites across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK and assessed how climate hazards could affect renewable energy production and storage up to 2030 and 2050. The findings are stark, especially the projected risk to renewable energy assets that will form the backbone of the region's low-carbon economy.
Beyond talking about energy resilience, ZRS will be discussing broader topics around climate risks such as:
- How to build a business case to map and respond to physical climate risks.
- Where should climate adaptation sit inside of a business?
- From risk to value: using resilience as a commercial opportunity.
