James Tiernan is Head of Sustainability at Unite Students, the UK’s leading provider of purpose-built student accommodation. Appointed in 2022, James oversees the business’s broad sustainability ambitions across both environment and community impact.
James was instrumental in developing Unite Students’ commitment to becoming the first net-zero carbon PBSA provider. He shaped the business’s net-zero pathway in 2021 and sustainable construction framework in 2023, and has overseen a 56% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions since 2019. Under his leadership, 100% of teams across the business are actively working on projects to benefit their local community.
